San Francisco, California -- In 1951, the University of San Francisco (USF) football team enjoyed an undefeated season of 9-0-0. However, that year, the USF team did not play in a bowl game. According to a USF press release, the team did not receive an invitation because it had two African-American players. It was suggested that USF would increase its chances of getting a bid for one of the bowl games if the team dropped both of their "Negro" players. However, USF rejected the suggestion and declined to play in that seasons bowl. The team's story is told in the book, Undefeated, Untied and Uninvited (Griffin Publishing Group, 2002).
